What was the thought process behind Carrie’s bohemian poolside hairdo?
She’s wearing a headband over a head scarf. The headband was a vintage piece from the 1920s that Pat found. At first we left SJ’s hair loose but as we were looking at her I decided that she'd look better with a ’20s bob. I said to her, “Let’s get rid of some of that hair,” and she was all for it. It was very impromptu—I’d already prepped her hair with great texture so I just tucked the ends under and she continued doing the scene. Working on set requires you to think on your feet, but it’s really fun!
Carrie wears the ’20s headband again when she and the girls do karaoke. How did you concoct the hairstyle for this scene?
The headband allowed me to play with different widths and shapes. When you watch the scene, you’ll see that I gave SJ a big bubble shape at the back. I did this by tying the headband underneath the roundest part of her head so that it made the whole back section of her hair bubble outward. It’s an amazing profile. And when you look at it from the front, you’ll notice that the headband pushes some of the hair down and makes it billow out at the sides.
